Good read for girls.
I read this for research purposes about the stage version because, although it is definitely a book for girls and rated a classic, I had never read it when I was a child. I probably started it and got no further than the entrance of Anne. There is a lot of dewy-eyed romantic description of the Canadian scenery, but Anne herself is insufferably garrulous. I understand this story is extremely popular in Japan as a theme for weddings, and couples travel thousands of miles to marry at the real Green Gables. But seriously, this is an acquired taste and having read about a third and gained the information I needed, I did stop reading. Having said this, as a book it still demands a 5star rating because it is a well written, thick book that should keep a girl-child absorbed for hours. It is just ... I am sure I would have adored it as a child and as a teenager, had I known it existed.
