    A very capable lens

After a lot of research I finally decided to buy the f2.8 Sigma 17 - 50 and I haven'y been at all disappointed. At f2.8 the lens gives soft but really appealing images - it's well useable at this aperture. Stopped down to f4 and the lens is very sharp indeed - any softness is gone. Same again at f5.6 but for me the fun with this lens is using it at the larger aperures - the images are so pleasing to the eye. I really rate this lens - the build quality is good and the manual focus ring which has been criticised in some reviews, I find easy to use and is nicely damped on my example. It's a pit the focus ring rotates when auto focussing but it didn't take long to get used to. I rate this lens and am very pleased I bought it. The picture of the tulip was taken at f2.8.

  • Pin sharp, great build and all round winner

The image quality knocks the Nikon kit lens into the weeds, it's sharper even at the extremes and has better coverage. Build quality is really good, it's nice and solid and although it's predominantly made of plastic it is an all metal skeleton meaning it will last well. It's great for landscape and portrait especially at 50 mm, I'd suggest stopping down to about f4 when using open wide but it's razor sharp at f5.6

  • Best budget fixed Aperture zoom.

Bought this minty used on eBay, works great on my d7000 and d7100, sharp images, great micro contrast, virtually distortion free. Buy one, you won't regret it.

  • Sigma 17-50

I bought the Sigma 17-50 prior to a recent holiday. I was using prime lenses until that point but didn't want to be carting primes around on a family holiday. I ended up keeping this lens on the camera well after the holiday. Granted the image quality isn't that of a prime but for a hobbyist like me it's not a million miles away and it's way better than any kit lens. Given the flexibility this lens provides, the image quality and the fact that it's significantly cheaper than the Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 I would heartily recommend this lens.

  • Excellent lens

This is a really good lens, amazing images are possible at 1:1 magnification, it's very sharp. The only thing that lets it down is the OS image stabilisation and the autofocus is a bit noisier than the Nikon equivalent. For the money it's a bargain.
