About this product

Product Information

An amazing graphic novel - an epic meditation on myth, history and storytelling. Alice in Sunderland is a graphic novel like no other. Bryan Talbot takes the city of Sunderland and the story of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell (the 'real' Alice) as the spine of his story and around them spins a spectacularly diverse range of different stories. He explores Carroll's links with Sunderland and shows how the city inspired his masterpieces. He delves into the city's history, from the Venerable Bede to George Formby, from its heyday as the greatest shipbuilding port in the world to its present multicultural mix. Talbot's artwork is a spectacular mixture of different styles- black and white ink line and pencil drawing, watercolour, collage and digitally manipulated photographic artwork. His stories are told from the stage of the Sunderland Empire theatre, an Edwardian music hall, and the book is a genuine variety performance. Alice in Sunderland's tribute to storytelling and history sets it apart as a landmark graphic novel.

  • An Amazing Book

This is an amazing book that tells the story of Lewis Carroll & Alice, but shows us so much more. The history of the theatre, social history etc.

  • wonderous

I haven't yet finished this but I don't want it to end, it's that good. I have read hundreds of graphic novels (away from the super-hero genre) and this is a jaw-dropping piece of work. For different reasons it is right up there with Maus and Persepolis. It entertains, it educates and it amuses - Mr Talbot, you've nailed it!

  • A compelling journey through time and Sunderland history.

Well written and in an unusual "comic strip" format. As well as telling some of the connection between Lewis Carrol and Sunderland, it gives a "fun" history of the Empire Theatre, and Sunderland's past!! An unusual and well presented book. I'd say more for teenagers and adults rather than children. I really loved reading it. Very good value for money.
