About this product

Product Information

WINNER OF THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2009 AN OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK Jack Boughton - prodigal son - has been gone twenty years. He returns home seeking refuge and to make peace with the past. A bad boy from childhood, an alcoholic who cannot hold down a job, Jack is perpetually at odds with his surroundings and with his traditionalist father, though he remains Boughton's most beloved child. His sister Glory has also returned, fleeing her own mistakes, to care for their dying father. A moving book about families, about love and death and faith, Home is unforgettable. It is a masterpiece. 'One of the greatest living novelists' BRYAN APPLEYARD, SUNDAY TIMES 'A luminous, profound and moving piece of writing. There is no contemporary American novelist whose work I would rather read' MICHAEL ARDITTI, INDEPENDENT 'Her novels are replete with a sense of felt life, with a deep and abiding sympathy for her characters and a full understanding of their inner lives' COLM TOIBIN 'Utterly haunting' JANE SHILLING, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

  • What a waste of my time

There aren't many books I struggle through - but this? If I find a book tedious (too much description and not enough narrative for example), I skip through all the descriptive stuff and pick out the narrative, just so as I don't have to plough through what I feel, for the most part, is irrelevant. However, even the narrative I found baffling, hints of this, hints of that, but nothing concrete. I am the sort of person who will look at (a film) or read a book till the bitter end, hoping that there is a glimmer of something, which often leads to disappointment on reaching the end of a long and tedious plot for it to come to nothing. Whether this book does reach a satisfactory conclusion or not, I have no idea as half way through, I put the book down, never to pick it up again. It has ...

  • Brilliant summary of religious and warm hearted family dealing with failings and life in general

Exremely well written. Difficult subject especially the over powering religious indoctrination of family
