Reviews
The Times UK - Ornery and odiferous, Maggie Smith delivers a compelling performance in THE LADY IN THE VAN., Hollywood Reporter - It's Smith's eccentric oldster who is the film's driving force, and the 80-year-old actress doesn't disappoint. Not surprisingly, she fully exploits the humor in her character's bizarreness., Variety - This is a lavish gift of a role for Smith, a layered gateau handed to her on a plate. She makes this hardy troglodyte a tottering, staggering force of nature, determined to owe nothing to anybody., The Daily Telegraph UK - This is a lavish gift of a role for Smith, a layered gateau handed to her on a plate. She makes this hardy troglodyte a tottering, staggering force of nature, determined to owe nothing to anybody.

  • This is a very different role than what Maggie Smith normally plays...You'll like it.

The role of the "Lady in the Van" is a complete departure from the types of roles Maggie Smith normally takes. Instead of playing a haughty aristocrat, Dame Maggie plays a once talented concert pianist who is involved in a fatal car crash and ends up blaming herself for the death of the victim. The once talented musician falls apart and becomes homeless and takes up residence in a van on a homeowners' driveway in London. You will be surprised how Dame Maggie finds little humour in being a homeless character. BTW, the story is based on a true story. What a truly engaging, empathetic film.

  • Wonderful!

I've seen this film a few times and it doesn't get old (which is why I've just bought a copy). The genius of Alan Bennett mixed with the wonderful acting of Maggie Smith and a beautiful (and more or less true) story. There are no car chases, torrid affairs or natural disasters; just a gentle, sweet and often funny film.
