Nicholas Cage.... again
JUSTICE (aka SEEKING JUSTICE) 2011 **/*** A strangely unengaging thriller. A kind-of cross between Strangers on a Train and The Brave One. Set in post-hurricane New Orleans, it is basically about the failure of the justice system. Nicholas Cage’s wife is attacked and raped, then a mysterious stranger (a very sinister and shaved-headed Guy Pearce) turns up at the hospital that she’s in and offers Will (Cage) to “dispose” of the rapist, since the legal system will just allow this repeat offender to offend again. Will confusedly agrees to this, whilst being told repayment might be a future “favour”. Cage is a gentle, peace-loving high-school literature teacher. It seems Simon (Pearce) runs an underground confederacy of ordinary citizens that take justice into their own hands. Then the ... Then the favour is called in, meanwhile Will has become less and less keen to be involved. After having to stalk a victim Will is told to execute the man who is a paedophile. Getting more stressed and more pressurised Will tries to talk to his victim but the victim is on-guard and attacks Will; in the scuffle the victim falls to his death accidentally. But Will has been duped. The paedophile is no sexual deviant but actually a reporter trying to expose the vigilante ring. Will is arrested but it seems this secret organisation has permeated the police and through passing on the secret password (some silly phrase about a rabbit) Will is released. Will is then on the run, from the police, and Simon, and Simon’s hoods. Will tries to work out what the reporter had stumbled on. It seems Simon is now completely out of control and has been setting himself up as a god. Violent shoot-out in deserted shopping mall where Simon, & Will’s friend and boss (whom implausibly is also in the conspiracy) all get killed. Will is then exonerated by police. The film ends with Will taking his information about the “organisation” to the editor of the dead reporter’s newspaper. But what do you know…? he’s part of the organisation as well. So why does the film not work? Predominantly flaccid direction I suspect, but also Nicholas Cage carries some of the fault. I feel he’s done this role so many times, that he has now become boring. Now if Guy Pearce had been cast as Will I think we would have had a far more engaging performance.
