About this product

Product Information

Kurt Vonnegut's masterpiece, one of the very best anti-war novels ever written, a book both beloved and banned - now rejacketed with brilliant, witty new look for the Vonnegut backlist Read Kurt Vonnegut's powerful masterpiece, which is as timely now as when it was first published. 'An extraordinary success. A book to read and reread. He is a true artist' New York Times Book Review Billy Pilgrim - hapless barber's assistant, successful optometrist, alien abductee, senile widower and soldier - has become unstuck in time. Hiding in the basement of a slaughterhouse in Dresden, with the city and its inhabitants burning above him, he finds himself a survivor of one of the most deadly and destructive battles of the Second World War. But when, exactly? How did he get here? And how does he get out? Travel through time and space on the shoulders of Vonnegut himself. This is a book about war. Listen to what he has to say- it is of the utmost urgency. 'The great, urgent, passionate American writer of our century, who offers us a model of the kind of compassionate thinking that might yet save us from ourselves.' George Saunders

    Compelling read.

Had heard a lot about this book--it is a cult classic. Never found it before. Knew the base subject was the destruction of Dresden through a survivor's eyes and expected doom and gloom and grim reality. But the very grotesque humour highlights how crazy and wasteful war is. And how human spirit survives despite it. Worth waiting for.

  • Slaughterhouse 5

Hmm ... It is a clever book, but I have to admit, it wasn't compelling or a particularly easy read. Yes, I can see why Vonnegut was so highly praised, but it's not a book I'll return to.

  • Good book for a chill price.

Good book for a good price. Timeless book. Costs some pocket change. It was just a bid odd that the books were clearly different prints. With another being a bit inferior.

  • Compellingly random weirdness

'Slaughterhouse 5' refers to the address where the hero, Billy Pilgrim survives the firestorm in Dresden in WW2 along with some other American POWs. The story is all about his adventures as he pops in and out of various times, including a spell on another planet. It's a compelling read in the same way as a lot of war books are; there is a lot of pointless death, bleakness, injustice and random weirdness. It is also fairly short at 177 pages. I recommend it.
