About this product

Product Information

'This is a novel of international significance. Courageous, provocative, haunting, it will open our eyes' - Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live happily in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo - until the unthinkable happens and they are forced to flee. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all - and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face - they must journey to find each other again. Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

A novel that highlights the emotiona,l as well as physica,l journey of refugees

The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a beautifully written story of the flight of a married couple (Nuri & Afra) from the fighting in Alleppo which killed their son and their journey across Europe to England as refugees. The author, Christy Lefteri brings, the people and their experiences to life vividly. The story crosses back and forth between the journey and their processing in the UK as refugees. I highly recommend.

  • Very moving

This is a story which compelled me to turn the page. It is a sad, sad story and although a work of fiction it was all to easy to believe the events were very much based on true stories. To those of us who have suffered at the curtailment of Liberty during lockdown - it is a sterling reminder of the hardships endured when your country which you love is torn apart by war.

  • Grateful fot my own bed

I could not put this book down, it was an incredible journey. Before I had empathy with refugee's and having read this that empathy has been magnified a 100 + times over. The beauty of Aleppo is descended into a war torn horror before the reader's eyes. I shall never look a bee again without being transformed, already I adore bee's and now I know much more about them from this book, it is a beautiful, disturbing, turbelent and haunting tale, each night more than ever the comfort of my own bed made me feel so grateful. Blessing to all those who seek refuge here, may your journey end in safety.

  • A genuine must read

This book is so well written, and the subject matter so sensitively dealt with. It really is compelling reading - I could not put it down. I genuinely felt the author really knew what she was writing about. It gave me a much better insight into some of the difficulties genuine refugees experience in their desperation to flee their homeland.

  • Excellent could not put down

An incredible story allowing a small insight into the journey many people are forced to take to seek safety. A heartbreaking read but very important too. Excellent, would highly recommend everyone read this book.
