About this product

Product Information

'Next to being a mother, I'd have loved to write books.' Oct 8, 1939 When war broke out, Nella's younger son joined the army while the rest of the family tried to adapt to civilian life. Writing each day for the Mass Observation project, Nella, a middle-aged housewife from the bombed town of Barrow, shows what people really felt during this time. This was the period in which she turned 50, saw her children leave home, and reviewed her life and her marriage - which she eventually compares to slavery. Her growing confidence as a result of her war work makes this a moving (though often comic) testimony, which, covering sex, death and fear of invasion, provides a new female perspective on the war years. In September 1939, housewife and mother Nella Last began a diary whose entries, in their regularity, length and quality, have created a record of the Second World War which is powerful, fascinating and unique.

    What a woman!

I am hooked! Nella Last is a gifted writer who really brings to life the concerns, deprivations and fears of living through a war, and also highlights the positives of people coming together in body and spirit. It feels as though she is writing about things that happened only yesterday, and her writing is particularly relevant in this time of Covid 'siege', when we are at war with a virus, and families are fractured. Thank God we haven't got bombs raining down as well, though! She is an amazing woman: very sensitive, loving, giving and a hard worker. How she found time to feed her family, clean the house, look after her hens and garden, sew countless small garments, cot blankets, and toys – and spend hours down at the WVS centre, is anyone's guess. And all while worrying about her two ...

  • Excellent Value For Money

Purchased this book as I am fascinated with the 1930’s-1950’s and wanted to find out more about the Home Front, this book and the rest in the series are well worth the money and are excellent to read and includes a lot of information and more.... I would recommend this to anyone interested in this period of history as it gives you a lot of information and daily routes, etc...

  • The Snowball Effect #2

The Snowball Effect. We watched this program on TV several weeks ago. Decided it was so good that we bought the DVD. Then we bought another DVD for my sister-in-law. We added two of the Diaries to form a Xmas present. We watched our own DVD on Xmas Day. Our house guests now want their own copy of the DVD as well. Having given the books away we now need to buy another set for ourselves. Well done Nella. Well done Victoria Wood.
