About this product

Product Information

The bestselling dystopian classic that became a cultural phenomenon and inspired an award-winning TV series ** THE SUNDAY TIMES NO. 1 BESTSELLER ** Go back to where it all began with the dystopian novel behind the award-winning TV series. 'As relevant today as it was when Atwood wrote it' Guardian I believe in the resistance as I believe there can be no light without shadow; or rather, no shadow unless there is also light. Offred is a Handmaid in The Republic of Gilead, a religious totalitarian state in what was formerly known as the United States. She is placed in the household of The Commander, Fred Waterford - her assigned name, Offred, means 'of Fred'. She has only one function- to breed. If Offred refuses to enter into sexual servitude to repopulate a devastated world, she will be hanged. Yet even a repressive state cannot eradicate hope and desire. As she recalls her pre-revolution life in flashbacks, Offred must navigate through the terrifying landscape of torture and persecution in the present day, and between two men upon which her future hangs. Masterfully conceived and executed, this haunting vision of the future places Margaret Atwood at the forefront of dystopian fiction. 'A fantastic, chilling story. And so powerfully feminist', Bernardine Evaristo, author of Girl, Woman, Other.

The Handmaid's Tale is a fantastic book, I first read it years ago, but, wanted to revisit it after seeing the television adaption, brillient.

  • The Handmaid's Tale. watching the series on TV and bought the book, its gripping, more detail that the series on TV. Totally a gripping read

  • Not as compelling as I anticipated

This is a classic and well written. Normally I read a book first then watch it on tv and the production dissapoints compared with my imaginings from the book. In this case, the televised version wins hands down because over several series it has the time and scope to expand on the original story. If I hadn’t seen the tv series I think I would have been a bit perplexed by the book. As a result the book was a bit ‘thin’.

  • Frightening police state

The book is a harrowing story about a self righteous police state. All the outrages detailed in the book have in fact happened during the course of human history. The story is told very well indeed and would be worth reading as an exercise in English literature as well as a warning of what might come. First class.

  • You won't be disappointed.

I watched the tv series avidly. The book is just as riveting and in fact helps to explain a few things better and it is useful to be able to put a few faces onto the characters.
