Concise and readable mapping history
A marvellously detailed yet easily readable account of the earliest 18 th century mapping in Scotland to what became the O S first series for the UK and Ireland. A real work of art. One to read AND KEEP !

A very good read.
Gives a superb sense of the actual task of the surveyors, which was often very arduous; & the enthusiasm that carried the whole mapping project, the intellectual idealism. For example: fascinating on the extraordinary lengths the surveyors went to, to try & get the place-names right in the mapping of Ireland. There should be a subtitle telling you that modern times are not included (so there is no mention of the introduction of the National Grid, for example).Gives a superb sense of the actual task of the surveyors, which was often very arduous; & the enthusiasm that carried the whole mapping project, the intellectual idealism. For example: fascinating on the extraordinary lengths the surveyors went to, to try & get the place-names right in the mapping of Ireland.
