About this product

Product Information

In this gently comic coming of age story, set in Florence over the course of the 1930s and 1940s, the illegitimate son of an Italian merchant is raised by a group of prim English ladies whose passion for Italian culture have made them permanent residents. With the rise of Mussolini and the outbreak of war, the ladies are interned as prisoners, and the boy risks his life to help them. It's a lushly photographed ensemble piece that instils in the viewer Zeffirelli's contagious passion for Italian art and affection for these brave ladies.

Additional Information
Based in part on his autobiography, director Franco Zeffirelli's TEA WITH MUSSOLINI is a drama with comic accents about a group of British and American travellers on an indefinite visit to Italy in 1935, when, as one character puts it, 'Mussolini was just a man who made the trains run on time'. Luca (played by Charlie Lucas) is a boy living in Florence whose family situation is precarious at best; his mother has died and his father has little time for him. Fortunately, he's a welcome guest with Mary (Joan Plowright), a English woman visiting Italy to soak up European culture. Mary and her friends -- high-toned Lady Hester (Maggie Smith), pretentious Arabella (Judi Dench), American art collector Elsa (Cher) and cheerful lesbian Georgie (Lily Tomlin) -- enjoy the cultured, creative atmosphere of life in Italy, and their initial response to the rise of fascism is to arrange a polite meeting with Mussolini to make sure he and his soldiers mean well. After some time, Luca's father becomes concerned that the boy is soaking up too much British influence and enrols him in a boarding school in Austria; by the time 1940 rolls around, situations have changed radically for everyone.

    Hits the spot

My 21 year old son and I watched this film on BBC New Year's Day. We were both totally enthralled by the characters, the story, the beautiful Italian setting. Such a fine film, you could watch over and again. In fact that is why I had to buy my own copy, which I've lent to my mother, so she too can enjoy this remarkably moving story, actually based on a true story.

  • Most critical review

Caricatures mixed with fascist reality...doesn't work for me.

Might be a great film...I had to turn it off after half an hour, so I don't know! But it was half an hour of my life I regret wasting. The main caricatures..a cliche group of elderly, English expat women, seemed as perplexed as I was....is this a comedy or a serious drama? I decided it was just a mess...I couldn't take it seriously and it didn't make me laugh...As for Cher and her over-acted American millionairess....ugh!!

  • Autobiography of a child in troubled Italy during WWII

Firstly it shows how gullible people have been concerning dictators during the WWII. Secondly, it is based on real facts and part of the life of the productor/writer/director of the film itself. And, finally, the pictures are fantastic and gives a very good idea of the places.

  • Beautiful film, based on true wartime experiences

The film is lovely, however I gave this DVD as a present for my mother, and it kept freezing whilst she tried to watch it, spoiling the experience rather. Such a shame, as it is a lovely film, which my son and I really enjoyed watching on BBC on the TV on New Year's Day.

  • A classic film of a war torn Italy that so few outsiders witnessed

This is a story that is truly brought to life by the world class actresses at the zenith of their careers. They attempt to continue life from a different era in spite of the evident horrors of wartime. Set against a backdrop of wartime Italy the heroines refuse to show fear under the most oppressive regimes that the world has witnessed.
