A little gem from the archives. A little mystery to keep you guessing.
"So Long At The Fair" is a long forgotten 'gem' from 1950 that I watched many years ago and the film had left an impact on me. It deals with a totally hypothetical situation that could have occurred anywhere in the world, like London in 1850 (The Great Exhibition) until the start of the 1950's. A brother and sister, on an European Tour, visit Naples before going to Paris, just prior to the Paris Exposition of 1889. They head to their seperate rooms for the night after an exhausting days' travel. In the morning, the sister, Victoria Barton (Jean Simmons), finds there is no trace of her brother John (Johnny) Barton (David Tomlinson), nor of the room he slept in, and everyone is denying his exsistance. Victoria talks to the authorities and her story is not believed and she must prove ... Her search takes her to an artist (Dirk Bogarde) who believes her as he borrowed money from the brother and desires to return the money to him. Together, and with other friends, they discover the brother's whereabouts, and why he 'disappeared' and to reasons why his disappearance had to be kept quiet from the greater community, particually on the eve of the opening of the Paris Expo. My only gripe? I wish they had a 'behind the scenes' doco to go with this film, as they attention to details of costumes and streetscapes is well and truely beyond the limited budget this film was shot under. I like the fact it is in black and white, that adds to the mystique of the era of the 1880's and of the suspense of the storyline of the film. Jean Simmons makes a great screen impact in this film and made me search for her other screen credits.
