About this product

Product Information

Living up to the multi-faceted meaning of the title, Left 4 Dead features four playable human characters, who have been left behind to survive in a city with a rapidly growing population of people-eating undead. The characters are identical in the way they play, although outwardly they appear largely dissimilar and unlikely to get along well at first. They'll need to trust one another and work together, as it takes teamwork to survive in streets overrun with rampaging zombies. Computer-controlled companions are available for solo players, but online multiplayer co-op games are a main thrust of play. In a standard game, players begin each level in a safe room area, where they can stock up on supplies and agree on a general strategy before moving out into the zombie-flooded city streets.

No place is safe for too long in this game, however, and once the zombies start coming, they keep coming, no matter where the players run or hide -- until the heroes make it to the next safe room, to end the level. The exact progression through each level is not known from the start. A built-in artificial intelligence "Director" analyses the players' positions and creates new challenges on the fly, making each game a little different and adding creepy factor of the unknown. Friendly fire is painfully possible, so players need to be careful where they aim and shoot. Sometimes, in close quarters, a quick melee attack is a safer way to temporarily stave off encroaching undead or knock a hungry zombie off a companion. Each player can carry only one health pack, which can be used for self-repair or to heal a teammate.

In addition to the four-person survival-horror shooter, other available modes of play allow multiplayer competition for up to eight, with one team of four playing as the human survivors and the other four players taking the roles of infected boss zombies. Each boss zombie has a different special power, such as a prehensile tongue or an explosive belly full of corrosive swamp gas, encouraging them to combine their strengths and work as a team, just like the unfortunate human beings they are hunting.

The "Game of the Year Edition" comes bundled with a "Survival Pack" that includes an entirely new "Survival" game mode and two complete campaigns for "Versus" mode.

  • hmmm...good game

Well I have played Valve games in the past and this seemed really similar to Half life and Team Fortress, but more of a dumb downed version of them combined. This is a fun first person shooter game that's very fast and easy to play and just jump in it whenever you want. That's what I like about the game, it's a simple concept. The zombies and the Special Infected and the bigger guys (including the Witch) make it fun and add a sense of tactical effort that your team has to use in order to overcome the zombie invasion. The music is really great too which makes the player feel paranoid that a zombie can pop out of nowhere and the subtle hints in the change of music help you realize when the horde of zombies is going to come or when the big guy starts to come on the scene. All of those ...

  • must own for Xbox Live users

I'd owned the first edition of Left 4 Dead since it was released on November 18th, 2008. Hardly a day went buy that I did no play it. When the free survival pack was released, I downloaded it immediately as well. So why buy this version of the game, which includes no new content? One reason would be if you have an Xbox with no hard drive. the survival pack is around 100MB, which would be a large chunk of an Arcade's 256MB of storage. Of course you can still play the other modes (campaign, versus, and offline single player) with the old disc even without the survival pack download. Versus mode is where this game shines the most, so some folks might not miss the survival pack. For me, the main reason to buy this copy was to tell Valve thanks. They made what might be my all-time favorite ...

  • Left 4 Dead GOTY Xbox 360

The game is paced almost perfectly so that you're always pushed to the edge. You'll run low on health. You'll run low on ammo or you'll run out entirely, requiring you to rely on pistols, which have unlimited ammo but aren't as effective as shotguns, assault rifles, and submachine guns. There are pipe bombs and Molotov bombs that you can scavenge, and you can turn propane tanks and gas canisters into weapons. The latter are particularly useful in the many "crescendo" elements in the game. These are points where you must initiate an action in order to open the way forward like having a van drive through a steel fence to open the route. The kicker is that the moment you initiate the action the zombie horde are going to come down on you like a tidal wave. The good news is that you have time ...

  • Great game!

Great game! Always a classic to go back to. Online player base isn’t the best but even solo this game is good to play for anybody wanting nonstop action.
